UPSC IAS Civil Services Exam 2016 Age Limit: Candidates face prospect of cut from 36 years to 26; no cut for SC/ST students

The Civil Services Examination (CSE) is popular. In fact, it is vey popular as almost every college graduate wants to sit for it. While only a minuscule of the candidates actually do manage to land a plum government job in the All-India Services exams for IAS, IPS, IRS, IFS and others, yet its popularity never fades. In fact, one big reason for it is that the study for this exam also comes in handy for a host of other competitive examinations and it increases the chance of ultimately getting a good job, whether in public or private sectors.

Still, the government is thinking of making changes across the board. While currently, candidates between the age group of 21 and 32 years are eligible to appear for the examinations, the new cut-off rule, if implemented, will reduce that to just 26, says ET. That means hundreds of thousands of students who had set their heart on participating in this exam will not be able to do so.

However, that rule, if passed, will not be applicable immediately. So those who are preparing for the exam have no need to fear of being left in the lurch. That should be of great relief to them. The Civil Services Examination is held every year and students start preparing for it from the first year of their graduation itself.

While this result will apply to the general category, no reduction in the Civil Services Examination (CSE) upper age limit for the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes will be done - the current upper age limit for them is presently 37 years.

While the committee has recommendatory powers, it is the Narendra Modi government which will take the last call on whether the Civil Services Examination (CSE) upper age limit will be reduced.This is not a time for jubilation, candidates, aspiring civil service men and women! If reports emanating from the corridors of power in the Government of India are to be believed then the Civil Services Examination (CSE) upper age limit may well be cut to 26 years by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), and that too soon. This stems from PM Narendra Modi move in August, 2015 to appoint a committee, chaired by former education secretary BS Baswan, to revamp the civil services examination system.
